Hello E38 fans.
My name is Sven-Erik, I live in Svendborg,Denmark and drive an e38 730I M60/1
engine. Model year 07/1994.
Its my hope somone can help me with following starting problem.
After driving few kilometer yesterday I parket the car, and now I am not able to start the engine. During the driving yesterday the engine stops momently a few times, but was able to start it again, but this morning the engine will
not start.
Engine turns over, but do not start. Found that fuel pump relay (K96) do not get power( relay tested and are working ok)
Fuse F57 and F17 OK
On fuel pump relay socket, messured +12 Volt on pin 6 and pin 8
Fuel pump tested with jumper over pin 6 and 2 on socket, pump working OK.
Even with jumper installed and fuel pump running, engine dont start.
It looks like the the Engine Control Module (DME) not activate the Fuel Pump
Relay K96. and some other(for me unknown ) start signal.
With a Peake R5/fcx tool have read a fault code 1A (Control unit supply)
and fault code 0d (Oxygen sensor,#19) and fault code 29 (Air mass sensor)
Have also done a reset and no fault code active after reset.
If DME module are defekt, is it just plug and play ore does replacement require
BMW Service.
Hope for some reply on this matter, please write in deutsch I read and understand deutsch, but do not write it very well.
Best Regards
Sven-Erik Ryborg

Hello Mister Cash and all other e38 fans.
After working two days on my starting problem I decided to get my car transported to BMW in Odense, arrived yesterday 1700, so hopefull I have some good news later to day.
I have try all my best to find the fault, but have to give up on this electronic
system. All related relays, fuses, and sensors tested, also done several reset and initialising of key, all without result, still no ignition and fuel.
Must be something with the Electronic Imobilation System.
I will let you now, best regards
Sven-Erik

We have checked the CRANKSHAFT SPEED SENSOR.
There is no resistance between PIN 1 and PIN 2.
I know from this Forum there must be 520 Ohm.
Check this to.
I hope you understand this.

Hello e38 fans.
I got my car from BMW Odense this afternoon, the reason was a defekt Crankshaft Speed Sensor, therefore no start signal from the DMI.
Depending on Model Year some e38 are equiped with the EWS I ore the
EWS II. (EWS= Electronic Wegfarhspeere)
The EWS I are installed from beginning 1/94 up to 1/95, and operating thrue the Door Lock Cylinders and Switch, and give the oportunity to operate the starting motor even with a missing signal from the DMI, in this case a defekt
Crankshaft sensor did not trigger the DMI to enable the ignition and the fuel pump.
Reneved part: Crankshaft Speed Sensor Part No. 12141731887
Best regards
Sven-Erik
